CSCS Card Renewal: How It Works

Several CSCS cards, including the Blue Skilled Worker card and the Professionally Qualified Person card, are valid for five years before they need renewing. (Source: CSCS — Types of CSCS cards.) Validity can differ by card type, so check the expiry date printed on your own card rather than assuming it matches someone else's.

There's a specific window to renew in

CSCS cards can only be renewed six months before the expiry date printed on the card, up to a year after it. (Source: CSCS — Renew or replace a CSCS card.) Renew too early and the system won't process it; leave it too long after expiry and you fall outside that window entirely.

Why leaving it too late matters

If a card lapses outside the renewal window, you're no longer just renewing — you're effectively starting the card application process again, which can mean sitting the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test once more, on top of the usual application and card fees. Diarising your renewal window six months out is a lot cheaper than finding out the hard way that your card lapsed while you weren't looking.

If you do need to sit the test again

The HS&E test format hasn't changed just because you've held a card before: 50 questions, 45 minutes, and a pass mark of 45 out of 50 — one combined score across every topic, not a section-by-section pass mark. Knowledge from years on site helps, but it isn't a substitute for actually revising the areas you don't work in day to day.

Our free mock test is a fast way to check whether you'd still pass today, before you commit to booking a real slot.
