How to Revise for the CSCS Test (Without Wasting Time)

The CITB Health, Safety & Environment test needs 45 out of 50 to pass — one combined score across every topic, not a separate pass mark per section. That changes how you should actually revise for it. Here's what that means in practice.

Cover every topic, not just the ones you know

With a 90% pass mark, you've got five questions of margin across the whole test. A trade you've never worked in, or a topic you've always skimmed past, can be enough to fail on its own — even if you're strong everywhere else. The test draws from eight core areas: PPE, manual handling, working at height, fire safety, hazardous substances, signs and signals, accident reporting, and general site safety. Revising four or five of those well and hoping the rest sorts itself out is the most common way people fail.

Practise under the real conditions, not relaxed ones

The actual test is 50 questions in 45 minutes, one sitting, no going back to change an earlier answer once you've moved on. Revising by casually reading through notes or flicking through flashcards doesn't put you under the same pressure as the real thing. Sitting a full-length mock test — timed, in one go — is a much more honest way to find out whether you'd actually pass today.

Pay attention to wording, not just facts

A lot of the questions that catch people out aren't really about not knowing the topic — they're about two answers that both sound reasonable, where only one matches what the regulations actually say. "The employer" versus "the employer, at no cost to the worker" is the kind of distinction that decides whether you get a question right, even if you broadly understood the topic. Reading the full question and every option carefully matters as much as knowing the subject.

Don't revise from "leaked question" sites

CITB doesn't publish its actual question bank, so anything sold online as "real leaked CSCS questions" is either wrong or guessing. Revising from bad information is arguably worse than not revising at all, because it gives you false confidence walking into the test centre. Stick to practice material that's honest about not being the real exam paper, but is checked against the actual regulations the real test is based on.

Find out where you actually stand

The fastest way to know what to focus your remaining revision time on is a realistic mock test with a topic-by-topic breakdown — not a gut feeling about which sections you "probably" know. Our free mock test is 50 questions, checked against the real HSE and CITB regulations, with instant results so you can see exactly where your weak spots are before test day, not after.
