What Happens If You Fail Your CSCS Test?
The CSCS card scheme requires you to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test before you can apply for most CSCS cards. If you don't pass, you don't get turned away with nothing - but it isn't free to try again, and it isn't instant either.
You'll need to book and sit the test again
A failed attempt means booking another test slot, which usually means waiting for an available date at a test centre, and paying the test fee again.
The retake isn't the only cost
Failing can cost you through another test attempt, travel, and time away from work.
Travelling to a test centre a second time, and potentially needing time off work to do it, adds up alongside the retake fee itself. None of that is a fixed, official figure - it depends on your test centre, your travel, and your job - but it's rarely just the price of the test.
What you can do about it
The test draws on a large question bank covering topics like PPE, manual handling, working at height, fire safety, hazardous substances, signs and signals, accident reporting, and general site safety. The most useful preparation is practising with realistic questions across all of those topics, not just memorising a handful of facts.
